UberX is launching in Toronto and Mississauga today at 2 p.m.
Uber says Torontonians can expect to pay as much as 40 per cent less per cab ride when using the new app. For example, a ride from city’s financial district to Yonge and Eglington will cost about $12 with UberX—that’s opposed to the $19 the ride will cost when hailing a regular cab.
While the company has a lot of fan among regular consumers, the city’s regulators have been less than impressed by the San Francisco-based startup. Uber’s previous foray into Toronto with its black car and limousine service saw the city slap the company with 35 bylaw infractions. The two parties are set to go court over the infractions in October.
The company was also the subject of severe backlash last year when it defended its price surging model during last year’s devastating rain storm. [via Toronto Star]
