Toronto commuters will have have something more than turkey dinner to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, as the TTC is set to introduce a host of small but significant improvements next week that it hopes will improve rush hour service.
The most immediate and noticeable change will be that two additional trains will be added to the Bloor-Danforth and the Yonge-University-Spadina lines, increasing the rush hour capacity of both lines.
Less noticeable, though sure to make a noticeable impact, is that subways will no longer be allowed to idle at a terminus station for more than 30 seconds after a green light is given—currently, subway operators wait until the next trains arrives before they leave the station.
Part of the improvements came at the behest of the TTC’s newest hire, Mike Palmer. Palmer came on as the organization’s chief operating officer recently. Before joining the TTC, Palmer worked for various transit transit organizations around the world, including the London Underground, and is a 29 year veteran of the industry.
Palmer expects the changes will not cost the TTC any additional money.
In other words, this seems like a win for everyone. [via Toronto Star]
