According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, The Toronto Blue Jays and R.A. Dickey have agreed to a two-year contract extension, thus completing the proposed trade between the Jays and the New York Mets.
In Dickey, the Blue Jays acquire the reigning National League Cy Young winner and last remaining knuckleball pitcher in the show. In parting with Dickey, however, the Mets are reported to receive two of Toronto’s best prospects – Travis D’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard – meaning that the Jays payed a heavy price in prospect capital to acquire the services of one baseball’s best pitchers over the past two years. The deal is not without substantial risk, either, as Dickey will be 41 at the conclusion of his contract in 2015. Moreover, the weapon that makes him so effective, the knuckleball, is notoriously unpredictable; a simple change in climate, time of day, or wind strength and direction could lead to a drastic decrease in effectiveness of the pitch.
But all that aside, the Jays receive a superb starter, one who should well-complement Brandon Marrow, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, and Ricky Romero. And, not to mention, make the proposition of winning the World Series in 2013 all that more realistic. Soak it in, Toronto: 2013 is going to an exciting year for at least one of Toronto’s sports teams.
Also, Dickey is badass – he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro!
