The Toronto Reddit and Imgur communities blew up this morning with pictures of cars and motorcycles using the Simcoe bike lanes as free parking spots. A detour to check out the situation on my way to work confirmed that the bike lanes were being misused by motorists, though it appears that the situation has since cleared up.
The newly painted bike lane is part of ongoing pilot project that the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure committee undertook this past May. The $390,000 project will see bike lanes added to parts of Richmond and Adelaide.
The lanes are currently temporary—they’re expected to stay there throughout 2014 and into 2015—but could become a permanent fixture should City Council decide to keep them. One hopes that should be enough time for everyone to become better acquainted with their street signs. [via Reddit Toronto]
