Apparently somewhere between spending 12 hours a day in front of our computers and being bombarded with culinary gems like the Doritos Locos Taco, we’re still supposed to be in shape. It’s no easy task, but there are some neat new tech tools that can help.
One of the best is the Nike+ FuelBand. It looks good with just about everything except formalwear and is super lightweight so you’ll barely even notice it hanging out on your wrist all day, tracking your every move. The band monitors your calories burned, steps taken, and counts how much ‘NikeFuel’ you earn.
What the heck is NikeFuel you ask? Well, it’s not really anything but a clever new universal measurement of activity created by Nike to allow Nike+ FuelBand users to compete with one another on a common ground. It’s also more positive, psychologically speaking, than tracking how many calories you burned. Set goals on your iOS device, Mac, or PC and watch the little LED display light up in excitement when you reach them.
Now, the band does have some limitations. For one thing, since it lives on your wrist, it’s not the best at tracking movements like pushups or weightlifting. There’s also no way to measure distance for runs or walks (although the lack of GPS tracking allows the band to conveniently live for almost a week without re-charging). It might not be the best solution for elite athletes, but it gives us couch-loving common folk effective motivation to move a little bit more, be a little bit healthier, and maybe even burn off that Doritos Taco.
Need a bigger push? Nike is launching its Nike Training Club for women at the Academy of Lions this month.
