To reduce carbon emissions, Royal Dutch Shell and its partners in the Athabasca Oil Sands Project announced Wednesday that they have begun construction on the first ever oil sands carbon capture and storage project in Alberta.
From late 2015, Shell’s Quest project will capture, transport, inject and store more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide underground annually. This project will reduce direct CO2 emissions from the Scotford Upgrader by up to 35 percent–the equivalent to removing 175,000 North American cars off of the road, says Shell.
The estimated $1.35 billion project will be heavily subsidized by the governments of Canada and Alberta.
A follow-up verification and effectiveness determination program is estimated to be completed on July 31, 2022.
