Yahoo! Acquires Tumblr for $1.1 Billion, Tumblr Users Lose Their Shit
Users: "can u not omg why im crying"

They say that they won’t screw it up, but since when has Yahoo! ever gotten the Internet right? (Well, since 1999.)

Tumblr and Yahoo! released a joint statement confirming the $1.1 billion purchase on Sunday night, meaning that the social blogging platform with over 300 million unique monthly visitors will be owned by “the original internet company” that thought this was a good idea. Because the Internet is quick to jump to conclusions, both CEOs are making concerted efforts to assuage user concerns.

“We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission — to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve — certainly isn’t changing,” founder David Karp said in a press release. “So what’s new? Simply, Tumblr gets better faster. The work ahead of us remains the same — and we still have a long way to go! — but with more resources to draw from.”

CEO Marissa Mayer also noted: “Per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business. David Karp will remain CEO. The product, service and brand will continue to be defined and developed separately with the same Tumblr irreverence, wit, and commitment to empower creators.” Mmmmhmmm.

Most importantly, Tumblr has “no plans to cull controversial material” which means that Tumblr’s wealth of NSFW porn is safe (Phew!). Obviously, this isn’t enough to stop users from freaking out, especially because everyone knows that the introduction of advertising will be the first change users will have to put up with.
