Canadians can breathe a sigh of relief and take a fearless bite of a pre-made burger as recent tests confirm that there’s no horse meat in them! After reports that some burgers sold in Europe contain horsemeat (up to 29% horsemeat in a certain ‘beefburger’ from British grocer, Tesco), scientists at the University of Guelph took it upon themselves to test the frozen and prepared burgers Canadians consume daily. The test results came back with good news for hamburger lovers who can take comfort in the fact that when Canadians say it’s beef, we mean 100%.
The U of G scientists put fifteen varities of Canadian burger meat through DNA testing at the school’s Biodiversity Institute of Ontario and all of them showed no traces of DNA from sources other than beef. Cooked burgers that made it through the test include a McDonald’s Big Mac and a Burger King Whopper, and from the frozen side beef burgers from President’s Choice, Schneiders, and even No Name. To make sure beef is beef and horse is horse, a kangaroo burger from the university’s Brass Taps restaurant was also tested and its results showed 100% kangaroo meat — in case you were suspicious about the purity of Kanga meat.
