Earlier today, you might have noticed some of your favourite websites were unavailable, and that your friends and colleagues were not responding to your emails. The latter might just be your friends and colleagues being jerks, but the former is likely due to one of internet’s largest domain registrars, Go Daddy, having issues with its servers. The company, which in 2010 claimed to concurrently manage forty-five million domains, has yet to state the exact reason for the breakdown in its services. However, a person with the twitter handle of “AnonymousOwn3r” has claimed responsibility for GoDaddy’s issues. In a tweet I’ve embedded below, AnonymousOwn3r claims he wanted “to test how the cyber security is safe…” It should be noted that while AnonymousOwn3r obviously associates with the infamous Internet group, judging from the content of his tweet, this is likely an action that AnonymousOwn3r took up on his or her own behest.
To add some context to the takedown: last year, GoDaddy drew the ire of the Internet community when it became clear that it was one of the supporters of the divisive Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The company later withdrew its support of the bill after a worldwide boycott saw 16,191 domains transferred away from the domain registrar. Obviously, however, there are some individuals that are still upset with the seemingly pro Internet censorship stance. [The Verge]
