Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has thrown in his two cents’ worth on how transit expansion in Toronto should be paid for.
In an interview with Metro, Mulcair said the federal government should take more of an interest in funding projects like subways and LRTs in major Canadian cities. If the NDP were elected federally, Mulcair said another $420 million of the revenue from the current gas tax would be put towards transit. About $90 million of that funding boost would go towards transit development in the GTA.
“We’ve got to get more money, generated out of tax revenue, to come to the rescue of urban transit issues in our big cities,” he told a Metro reporter while riding the subway along the Bloor-Danforth line.
