Conservative government asked to curb the salaries for executives of federal institutions and other must-read stories

LOCAL

A Toronto police constable on trial for assualting a prisoner testified that his supervisor lied about details in court, and twice suggested that he not report what really happened. The sergeant who handled the case improperly was disciplined, limited now to administrative duties, while the parking policeman found guilty of assault was fired and sentenced to 100 hours of community service. [Toronto Star] 

The city of Toronto is undertaking a pilot project of painting certain curbs red as an indicator of no-parking zones. The idea is to make it clear beyond a doubt where you can and can’t park, but also to ease traffic congestion by reducing the number of cars accidentally blocking lanes in no-parking zones. [Globe and Mail]

The TTC gave journalists a free ride Tuesday on the next generation streetcars, set to hit the streets by late 2014 and beyond. They are twice as long, which means both greater capacity and potentially unintended consequences once they hit the road, but they are mercifully air conditioned. NATIONAL

The company responsible for the deadly railway disaster in Lac-Megantic has stopped paying for the clean up, leaving the town on the hook. The mayor said that some of the contractors even stopped working on the mop-up operations and threatened to walk off last week. [Globe and Mail]

Aaron Yoon, the 24-year-old Canadian held in a Mauritanian prison since December 2011 on terror-related charges, has been released. Yoon had travelled with 2 people from his high school who were found among the dead al-Qaeda attackers after a gas plant strike near Algeria, but has maintained all along he’s innocent. [CBC]

Public sector unions and opposition parties are calling on the Conservative government to reign in lucrative pay schemes for executives of federal organizations. Five senior executives at the Public Sector Pension Investment Board were awarded nearly $16.3-million in total compensation for 2012-13–a significant hike from the $10.9-million issued the previous year. [National Post] 

 

INTERNATIONAL

Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after it was leaked that he engaged in lewd online conversations and shared sexualy explicit photos, has done it again. The mayoral candidate of New York is embroiled in another similar scandal, this time using the online handle “Carlos Danger.” [National Post]

Many in Iraq are concerned the country will fall once more to civil war after al-Qaeda’s audacious assault on Abu Ghraib prison Monday. Suicide bombers and mortar shells were used in the assault, resulting in 500 prisoners released and 120 Iraqi guards killed according to al-Qaeda, but officials in Baghdad cite much lower numbers. A bomb blast outside of security headquarters of one of Egypt’s Nile Delta cities wounded 19 people. Many fear deteriorating security after President Mohamed Morsi’s ouster, as 11 have been killed since Monday. [CBC]
