LOCAL

The former 100-metre world-record holder Asafa Powell, his Jamaican teammate and their Toronto trainer were placed under formal criminal investigation for breaking Italy’s doping laws. Their trainer from their hometown in Jamaica blamed Christopher Xuereb, the Toronto trainer, for the positive tests. A Toronto policeman is being disciplined after pretending in an interview to be a stranded passenger in a flooded GO train, where he praised the police response,when he was in fact one of the policemen rescuing people. Nickolas Dorazio has been switched from major crime units to patrol duty. NATIONAL

A Progressive Conservative Party backbencher from Alberta has resigned after being arrested during a prostitution sting in the United States. Mike Allen was in the Midwest as part of an Alberta government contingent to drum up trade when, police allege, he used the site backpage.com to engage in prostitution. [Globe and Mail]

New historical research claims that hungry Aboriginal children and adults were unwittingly subjects in nutritional experiments by the Canadian government. In 1942, researchers saw rampant malnourishment on Manitoba reserves, but instead of fixing it, the government decided they’d make good test subjects. [Toronto Star] 

Sun Media Corp. announced Tuesday they are cutting 360 jobs and closing eight of its local publications as well as three of its free commuter papers. The cost saving measures are expected to lead to $55 million in annual savings. [National Post]

 

INTERNATIONAL 

Panama has seized a ship bound for North Korea carrying an antiquated Soviet-era missile radar system under 200,000 sacks of brown sugar. The seizure happened after a violent 5-day standoff between the marines and the 35 men crew, armed largely with sticks. [New York Times]

The European Union has dealt a harsh blow to the Israeli settlement enterprise, as a new directive insists all future agreements between the EU and Israel must explicitly exclude the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The EU will prohibit the issuing of grants, funding, prizes or scholarships unless a settlement exclusion clause is included. [The Guardian]

An angry backlash has forced a juror in the George Zimmerman murder case to abandon plans to write a book about her experience. The New York publishing house rescinded its offer of co-operation to the middle-aged woman, known only as juror B37,  after “careful consideration” in response to thousands of critical messages on social media. [The Guardian]
