LOCAL

Benjamin Levin, a teacher and researcher at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto’s teachers’ college, has ceased all his duties in the wake of numerous child-porn related charges. He was also the former Ontario deputy minister of education. [Toronto Star] 

Two weeks after the massive Toronto storm that unleashed 100mm of rain, flooding basements and knocking out power, clean up efforts are about 99% complete. The extra effort cost the city about $2-million. [Toronto Star]

The TTC will not swoop in to save BIXI, Toronto’s beleagured bike-share program. A staff report to be brought to Wednesday’s TTC commission meeting recommends not to incorporate Bixi into its services. [Globe and Mail]

 

NATIONAL

Hockey Canada released its 47-man roster for the summer orientation camp in advance of the 2014 Olympic games in Sochi. As usual, the Canadians who don’t make this team would no doubt be the only serious contender to beat Canada. [CBC] 

The federal government is contriburing $60-million to rebuild the town of Lac-Megantic after it was rocked by the huge train disaster July 6. The environment ministry says 5.7 million litres of oil aboard the train was dumped into the town, but $35-million is earmarked for economic development. [CBC]

The charity that had asked Justin Trudeau to pay back $20,000 has since lost half of its board and no longer wants the money back. It’s unclear how or why the board members left, but among the departed are Ms. Buck, who wrote the letter to Trudeau asking to return the money, and Judy Baxter, who gave the letter to the Conservative MP. INTERNATIONAL

Kate Middleton gave birth to a healthy eight pound, six ounce baby boy, the new heir to the British throne. Months of media speculation concerning Kate’s baby bump are thankfully over, surely to be replaced by a lifetime of watching this kid grow up. [National Post]

After a U.K. woman in the Greater Manchester Area on horseback and another girl on a pony were refused service at a McDonad’s drive-through, the girl rode her pony into the restaurant. They received a ticket for causing alarm and distress, this after the pony defecated in the middle of the restaurant. [National Post]

The family of Mohamed Morsi, the ousted President of Egypt, allege human rights violations over his detention, and plan to sue the coup leader. The deputy head of Egypt’s doctors’ syndicate said they should grant medical access to Morsi, who has a history of diabetes and liver complications, and the EU are also repeatedly called for his release. [The Guardian]
