GO Transit to end monthly passes

GO Transit riders will not be able to purchase monthly passes after Jan. 1, but will have the option to switch to the Presto system.

The reloadable electronic fare card system will not be more expensive than the existing monthly price because the card offers a multiple-trip discount. Riders also have the option of paying for their fares individually.

The Presto system is already available for GO Transit riders, and CBC News reports monthly pass purchases have gradually decreased as a result. A total of 23,500 monthly passes were sold in Sept., accounting for 18 per cent of the service’s commuters.

MPs debate anti-bullying motion

Canada does not have a national bullying prevention strategy, but that may change when Parliament resumes on Monday.

NDP MP Dany Morin plans to introduce a motion to create a nationwide anti-bullying strategy, through an all-party MP committee study, writes CTV News. This motion comes less than a week after Amanda Todd, 15, committed suicide following years of online torment, as per police findings. The Chicoutimi-Le Fjord member told CTV’s Question Period on Sunday that he had also been bullied growing up.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark spoke out against bullying on Friday, saying it might be time to consider criminalizing this online behaviour.

Occupy Toronto turns 1

Happy birthday, Occupy Toronto!

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the movement’s protest in the city, demonstrators plan to host a day-long event at St. James Park, its 40-day-long impromptu campsite, on Monday. Starting at 1 p.m., the group’s Facebook page says the Occupy protestors will march from King and Bay streets to the park, at Jarvis and King streets.

The Toronto Occupy movement was set up in solidarity with other social and economic inequality demonstrations across the world, particularly Occupy Wall Street, which launched in Sept. 2011. In Toronto, protestors were forced to leave the park after the city served them eviction notices.

Also on the docket for the anniversary? CityNews writes a garlic planting “jam” will take place, to “ward off the vampires sucking the life out of the city.” However, this time around, the protestors do not plan to spend long amounts of time at St. James Park — the group’s Facebook page says they’ll be gone by 11 p.m.
