RIM’s $518M loss, 5,000 job cuts, BlackBerry 10 pushed to 2013
Research in Motion Ltd. saw its year-to-year sales dwindle by 42 per cent, and now, in an effort to cut costs, the BlackBerry 10 launch has been delayed until 2013.
Announced late on Thursday, RIM revealed a posted loss of $518-million in its fiscal first quarter, which ended June 2. The Canadian tech giant also unveiled plans to lay off 5,000 employees, or a third of its global workforce, in corporate restructuring. This news sent shares down nearly 20 per cent in after-hours trade, resulting in a nine-year low.
The company is looking to cut costs wherever possible, aiming to trim $1-billion, in total. Analysts foresaw losses at RIM, but did not anticipate a decrease of this magnitude.
Chaz Bono to cameo on Degrassi
Degrassi‘s Adam in last year’s Emmy Award-nominated episode, which featured a prominent transgender storyline
Hollywood personality Chaz Bono is in Toronto to film a cameo on Canada’s popular teen drama Degrassi, as himself.
Bono will share his scene with Adam, the show’s transgender character. Last year, Degrassi was nominated for an Emmy Award for its episode about that teen, who was born a girl, but lived as a boy.
The Canadian Press is reporting that Bono was keen to appear on the show after meeting with some of the show’s producers at the aforementioned award show. The episode in question, which is shooting now, will air near the middle of the 12th season, which begins airing on July 16 on MuchMusic.
DSK gets separated
Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and his wife have separated, amidst his legal battles regarding a New York sexual assault case, and alleged prostitution ring involvement.
Weekly magazine Closer reported on Thursday that Anne Sinclair, Strauss-Kahn’s wife of 20 years and popular journalist and news editor, gave him the boot from their Paris home about a month ago. The pair are now living separately.
Though no sources were cited in the story, a person close to Strauss-Kahn confirmed these reports.
Sinclair, who fell for the former finance minister after interviewing him, publicly stayed by his side when he was accused of trying to rape a New York hotel maid in May of 2011.
