Intense Elliot Lake Rescue Efforts Continue
Following a busy day of provincial and possibly federal intervention in the Elliot Lake, Ont. rescue effort, search crews worked overnight to find anyone trapped in the rubble, on Tuesday. Using sophisticated machinery, rescue officials are looking for at least two people who remain under the debris since Saturday’s roof collapse at Algo Mall.
So far, one person is confirmed dead, and more than 20 people have been injured – none of them seriously – after the mall’s roof gave out.
However, in spite of the high-risk rescue effort, officials are not running out of hope. The number of those unaccounted for has been reduced from around 30 names, to 12.
Iconic writer-director Nora Ephron dies at 71

Nora Ephron, the multi-hyphenate writer, director and journalist, has died at age 71, of pneumonia, a complication from acute myeloid leukemia.
The iconic Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally and Julie and Julia helmer was reported dead earlier in the day on Tuesday by gossip columnist and friend Liz Smith. Her family soon corrected the statement, saying instead she was “gravely ill.”
A lifelong New Yorker, the trailblazing Ephron was born to a family of screenwriters, and wrote for the New York Post, The New York Times Magazine, New York, and Esquire before dabbling in film. Nominated for three Academy Awards, Ephron, also a published author, is perhaps best known for coining the phrase, “I’ll have what she’s having,” from the aforementioned Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan flick.
A PC Senator Calls Reporter a Bitch, Apologizes After Backlash
Brazeau (right) gained political and national notoreity for facing off against MP Justin Trudeau (left) in a boxing match on Parliament Hill
Tweet like a man! At least, that is the lesson Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau has learned after being widely criticized for making a sexist comment about a female journalist on Twitter.
He has since apologized, albeit reluctantly.
Canadian Press reporter Jennifer Ditchburn wrote about the senator’s poor attendance record, which holds the glory of being the worst of any Red Chamber member in Parliament’s current session. According to a summary in the Globe and Mail, Brazeau missed 25 per cent of the upper chamber sittings between June 2011 and April 2012, and 65 per cent of the meetings about the aboriginal peoples committe, one on which he sits. Similarly, Brazeau was also absent from 31 per cent of the human rights committee meetings, an organization of which he is the deputy chair.
After citing “personal matters” as the reason behind his frequent absenteeism, Brazeau tweeted, ““While u smile Jen, others suffer. Change the D to a B in your last name and we’re even! Don’t mean it but needs saying.”
Earlier this year, Brazeau gained political and national notoreity for facing off against MP Justin Trudeau in a boxing match on Parliament Hill. After losing, unexpectedly, to Trudeau, perhaps he thought it was time to pull another punch – on someone just doing their job, and reporting the facts.
