Rob Ford to get appeal answer by Wednesday

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford will learn on Wednesday how much time he has left in office, and if his appeal will be heard on Jan. 7.

680 News reports that if Ford is denied the appeal, he will be out of the mayoral office on Dec. 10. If that were to occur, city council could decide to set a byelection date for early 2013, or appoint a new mayor.

Justice Charles Hackland — who found Ford guilty of violating the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act last week — ruled on Nov. 30 that if the mayor loses his appeal, he could run in the aforementioned Toronto byelection.

Ford addressed this scandal on his NewsTalk 1010 radio show over the weekend, and said he would not resign or quit from office.

1 in 4 Canadians expect holiday bonus

A new BMO survey finds a quarter of all working Canadians expect a year-end bonus this holiday season.

One in four respondents expect these additional earnings, with around 86 per cent believing it will be at or greater than the previous year’s bonus.

The Canadian Press reports this economic confidence comes amid a stalling economy, as Canada has shown no GDP growth in the past month.

Of those anticipating a bonus, half of them plan to add it to their savings, pay down their debt or support the costs of holiday spending.

The BMO Commercial Banking Holiday Survey was conducted online with a sample of 1,000 Canadians between Nov. 23 and Nov. 27, by Pollara.

Argo hits $100-M

Ben Affleck’s Argo hit the $100-million mark at the North American box office over the weekend.

The film, released seven weeks ago, is drawing in a lot of critical raves and Oscar buzz, but has also proven to be a commercial hit.

The Hollywood Reporter writes the film has remained in the North American top 10 box-office grosser chart since its release. This is Affleck’s first directorial feature to hit this commercial milestone, as his last helmed-film, 2010’s The Town, earned $92.2-million domestically.

Argo stars Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Tate Donovan, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall and John Goodman in a based-on-a-true-story retelling of the 1979 Iranian hostage drama.
