Leibovitz’s famous portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which was taken hours before his assassination in 1980. We think it was taken with the Lo-Fi filter.
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) just broke news that they’ll be receiving a massive donation of celebrity-photographer Annie Leibovitz’s work. The collection includes the iconic image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono which was taken just hours before his assassination in December 1980. Also among the famous subjects featured are a stripped and pregnant Demi Moore, Whoopi in a bath of milk, the Blues Brothers impersonating a blued-up Tobias Fünke, and The Queen looking badass.
Quick Snaps:
Estimated value: $20 million
Total collection: 2,070 images
Editioned prints: 1,307 images
Vintage file prints: 763 images
Leibovitz’s life story is just as fascinating as the many famous subjects’ she depicts. Her Almost Famous-like rise to fame occurred when she began hanging out with The Rolling Stones in the early 70’s, where she picked up a nasty heroin addiction. She also maintained a relationship with the late literary icon Susan Sontag.
Needless to say, the AGNS’s director Ray Cronin is thrilled: “Annie Leibovitz exhibitions break attendance records anywhere she shows them. It doesn’t matter if that’s Paris or Moscow or Washington, D.C. I think, in Halifax, I can’t imagine we won’t follow that trend.”
