Canada’s biggest theatre chain has just introduced a new purchase option at the box office and online. The SuperTicket includes both a night at the theatre and a voucher for an at-home download of the movie. The digital copy becomes available around the time the film goes to DVD, and is UltraViolet to allow sharing on multiple devices. Hollywood Studios are lining up to get in on the deal, with Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Sony, and Universal having already signed on.
Cineplex knows exactly what’s going on here. If I can download a movie and watch it in my snuggie, that’s going to be my Friday night. If it’s a movie that’s a must-see in theatres, 3D, widescreen, and just ’cause we’re craving that nacho cheese, then fine, we’ll take a trip to Scotiabank. If it’s good, we’re going to head home and download it so that we watch it again later without spending a paycheck and having our seats kicked by that one kid. If home entertainment is the now, then the SuperTicket is Cineplex’s way in.
The new idea is good. It’s Cineplex’s way to capitalize on downloading, offering an alternative to torrents before you get back to your computer. My only issue is committing to purchasing a digital copy before you even know if you like the flick – but if it’s a movie that’s already got you down to the theatres, it’s probably one you think you’ll like.
SuperTickets will be available at Cineplexes nationwide within the month.
