This is the third and final instalment of the TURF-Tapes series, a bunch of mixtapes designed to celebrate acts performing at the Toronto Urban Roots Festival, which kicked off yesterday. The multi-day festival will keep on keepin’ on until Sunday, July 7th, and still has a lot of fantastic acts for you to feast your eyes and ears on. One such talented individual is Hannah Georgas, who, in addition to being featured on our last two TURF-Tapes, curated this week’s mixtape. Give it a listen, and read her annotated tracklist below.
Where and how was this mix recorded?
I made this mix hanging out at my place in Vancouver. We had a crazy heat wave this past weekend. I decided to hide from the sun and get down to business.
What was the idea behind the mix?
This mix was created to highlight and get excited about all of the artists that are playing TURF!
In your own words, can you describe the sound of your music?
I like people to listen and garner their own opinion – but for me, these words come to mind: Emotional, Songwriter, Electronic, Pop, Rock.
Who’s an act you’re particularily excited to see at TURF?
I hope that I can be around to catch Camera Obscura!
Where and when can the Standard’s readers see you perform during TURF?
12:30 p.m. this Saturday! I’m also playing Saturday night at The Horseshoe with Northcote and The Wooden Sky at 10:30 p.m. Come!
Annotated Tracklist:
1. Camera Obscura – French Navy
The lead singer’s voice is so sweet and soothing. This was the first song I heard by them that caught my attention right away.
2. Camera Obscura – James
This song is a grower off their record called My Maudlin Career. The lyrics are really beautiful.
3. Royal Canoe – Hold Onto The Metal
These guys are my buds and I’m really excited about what they’re doing. They are killer live and I really dig the interesting synth sounds they use and their production style.
4. Belle and Sebastian – We are the Sleepyheads
My boyfriend introduced me to them and over the past year I’ve listened to them quite a bit. Their music makes me feel happy inside and they make me want to do my laundry and clean my house.
5. Arkells – Oh, the Boss Is Coming!
I love this tune by Arkells and they are my homies. They are a must see live band. They own that shit.
6. She and Him – I Thought I Saw Your Face Today
A bittersweet break up song this is…
7. Joel Plaskett – Through and Through and Through
This song is so fun, and Rose Cousins’ back up vocals rule (I think that’s her…).
8. Neko Case – Maybe Sparrow
This song really showcases Neko Case’s pipes. I love!
9. The Wooden Sky – Something Hiding For Us In The Night
Great way to end a mixtape if you ask me. This fella sings with so much heart. I’m excited to play with them this Saturday!
