Sarah Polley’s highly-anticipated documentary, The Stories We Tell, will have its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.
The famed actor-filmmaker revealed exclusively to realscreen that her first feature-length documentary will debut at this year’s TIFF, on Monday. With the opening TIFF 2012 press conference set for Tuesday, this announcement marks one of the first official festival confirmations.
As one of four projects selected for the 2009 inaugural CFC/NFB Feature Documentary Program, the 90-minute film examines the way that people “fictionalize family narratives,” and the “insatiable need, as human beings to turn our lives into stories.”
A lifelong Torontonian, Polley has a long-standing relationship with TIFF. Her films Away from Her and the Little Portugal-centric Take This Waltz launched at the festival in recent years, to great acclaim, including Academy Award and Genie nominations.
The Stories We Tell is produced by Anita Lee, a local NFB producer from the Ontario Centre. The film will be released in Canada in October under Mongrel Media, the same studio used for the distribution of Away from Her and Take This Waltz.
Canadian filmmaker Jamie Kastner’s latest documentary, The Secret Disco Revolution, will also premiere at the festival. This year, TIFF will run from September 6 to 16.
Correction: Anita Lee has replaced Sonia Hosko as a producer for The Stories We Tell. The Toronto Standard regrets the error.
