Casa Loma Needs a $20-M Face Lift

Toronto’s iconic landmark, and one of Canada’s most-famous castles, is in dire need of $20-million worth of repairs. Lyle Hall, a spokesman for HLT Advisory Inc., as hired by Casa Loma Corp. says the century-old building is “at the tipping point.”

The CLC, which manages the residence and estate buildings associated with Casa Loma, will make a recommendation to the City of Toronto and city council’s executive committee on June 12.

The castle, a long-time preferred special event rental site and movie set (think X-Men, Chicago, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) earns an estimated $1-million annually, after expenses. Long managed by the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma, Hall warns that, “capital need is urgent.”

MVP Vladimir Guerrero Signs a Minor-League Contract with the Blue Jays

Vladimir Guerrero, famed baseball superstar and former Montreal Expo, signed to a $1.3-million minor-league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Guerrero, 37, is a former MVP, and may make it to the big-league roster and play as the team’s designated hitter, bumping the red-hot Edwin Encarnacion to first base.

Guerrero started his Major League Baseball career with the Expos, and has a somewhat iconic reputation with Canadian baseball fans. A career .318 hitter, with 449 home runs, he hit .290, with 13 home runs and 63 RBIs as a designated hitter with the Baltimore Orioles last year. Who knew?

For now, it remains unclear as to what Guerrero’s role will be on the team, but this Blue Jays season ticket holder is pretty excited.

The Globe and Mail to Charge for Online Content

Like the New York Times before them, The Globe and Mail will begin charging for their online content. The details and the limits of the paywall have yet to be revealed, but publisher and CEO Phillip Crawley says this move, announced Thursday, will help the newspaper improve its bottom line.

Canadian news conglomerates Postmedia and Torstar have dabbled in paywalls, with the latter charging for certain articles of affiliate The Hamilton Spectator. Globe Plus, a subscription-only service for less-recent web articles, is the newspaper’s current practice, but the question remains: Would you pay for The Globe and Mail? Bono did serve as a guest editor, after all – that has to be something worth paying for. Right?
