One dead in Little Italy shooting

One person is dead following a daytime shooting in Toronto’s Little Italy on Monday.

A 35-year-old man was shot and killed at around 3:30 p.m. at The Sicilian Sidewalk Café at 712 College St., near Ossington Avenue. Police were called to the scene of the gelato shop after witnesses said they heard at least five gunshots during a Euro 2012 soccer match between Italy and Ireland.

Another man, also believed to be in his 30s, was shot, but only received minor injuries. Police have confirmed to CTV that the two people were shot as part of a targeted attack.

The suspect, who ran from the scene, was last seen dressed as a construction worker, and wearing a white filter mask over his face.

Blue Jays’ Kyle Drabek out for the season

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Kyle Drabek will have Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, and miss the rest of the season as a result.

During a game against the Washington Nationals last week, Drabek felt a “popping sensation” in his elbow, and was promptly removed from the game. The 24-year-old right-hander suffered from a torn ulnar collateral ligament, as recently confirmed by Dr. James Andrews.

Tommy John surgery is not entirely new to Drabek, as he underwent the same procedure four years ago while playing in the minor leagues for the Philadelphia Phillies. That time, he required 13 months of recovery and rehab time before returning to the mound.

Jays manager John Farrell has told reporters he thinks this invasive procedure is, “The only option.” Drabek is one of three Jays starting pitchers who was injured within the span of four games last week. With 13 starts this season, his record was 4-7, and he held a 4.67 ERA.

Luka Rocco Magnotta will appear in a Montreal courtroom on Tuesday, via video link, to face multiple charges, including first-degree murder for the death and dismemberment of Chinese student Jun Lin.

The 29-year-old, who was apprehended in Germany earlier this month, was successfully extradited back to Canada on Monday. Montreal police Const. Yannick Ouimet told the CBC that Magnotta would appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.

Beyond first-degree murder, Magnotta is also facing charges of committing an indignity to a human body, posting obscene material, mailing obscene material and criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament.
