As we have come to expect with all things newsworthy, today’s ruling that Rob Ford was to be removed from office was the genesis of a bunch of internet stuff.
Before the decision went public, journalists went a little stir crazy waiting in line for the verdict to be faxed and photocopied. When Toronto Star reporter David Rider accidentally sent a placeholder tweet (now deleted) featuring the comically ambiguous “canx” in place of can or can’t, well, it was too much for some journos, already twitchy with anticipation, to handle. It spawned a meme that CBC’s Your Community Blog documented thoroughly.
via @ivortossellWhile journalists had to wait in line for the verdict, Ford was informed of the judge’s decision via an email notification from Foursquare.
via @joshmcconnellNot wanting the not-quite-former-mayor-yet’s resale value to drop any further, some industrious soul quickly listed a “Used Ford for Sale” on Craigslist.
VICE’s obituary of “The Greatest Mayor of All Time” made the US front page, cementing Toronto’s reputation as a world-class city in regards to our drunkeness and not-giving-a-fuck-ness.
Ford’s ouster was covered by myriad international news outlets, but the most prestigious coverage came from The New York Times, who actually scooped local reporters by breaking the story that the mayor had in fact been killed. The Times is on it!
And of course there were some choice tweets:
